Education

I believe the federal government has a legitimate role in helping states and communities educate our nation’s young. That’s why I’ve worked to substantially increase the federal dollars sent to New York to support public schools.

I also believe that schools must be held accountable for student performance and support requirements that students be periodically tested to measure their progress. To that end, I have supported increases in federal funding to help reduce class sizes, better train teachers, modernize classrooms, construct new schools and pay for the ideas contained in the “No Child Left Behind Act.”

As a former teacher, I know the importance of a first-class education, and believe we should make it easier for our young people to go to trade schools, colleges and universities.

I have co-sponsored legislation to preserve and expand a federal income tax deduction for teachers that is set to expire at the end of this year. The Teacher Tax Relief Act, would make the tax deduction for teachers’ out-of-pocket classroom expenses permanent, and would increase the deduction amount from $250 to $400 per year. The National School Supply and Equipment Association found that nationwide teachers spend an average of $589 out of pocket on classroom supplies.

Along with like-minded colleagues in the Congress, we’ve worked to create tax credits for out-of-pocket tuition expenses, expand Pell grants, allow penalty free IRA withdrawals for education expenses, and allow tax free educational savings accounts.
I have also introduced the More Money for College Act, which would make college tuition tax deductible.

As a parent and grandparent, I also know that raising children is expensive. I strongly supported the creation of a $1000 per child tax credit for working families and efforts to eliminate the marriage penalty tax.

Our nation must better educate our young if we expect them to have a strong future.
