Deficit Reduction

The federal government is currently running a deficit because we are a nation at war, because of the runaway growth of entitlement programs, and because of wasteful spending on duplicative or unnecessary federal programs. If we don’t work to eliminate wasteful programs and better manage critical entitlement programs, they will continue to eat up larger and larger portions of the federal budget, leaving much tougher decisions for our children down the road.

I voted to amend the constitution to require a balanced federal budget and supported the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, which restrains the growth of federal spending. The legislation passed the Congress and was signed by President Bush in early 2006.

I have also co-sponsored the Commission on the Accountability and Review of Federal Agencies Act, which would create an independent commission to scrutinize federal agencies. The Commission would be charged with evaluating federal agencies, identifying unnecessary spending and duplicative programs that serve the same population, then submitting needed reforms to the House of Representatives. The programs would then be eliminated unless Congress votes to retain them.

There are plenty of places for the Commission to look. According the U. S. Treasury Department, there are billions in transactions made by federal agencies that the Treasury Department cannot account for. Between 1997 and 2003, the Defense Department purchased and left unused approximately 270,000 commercial airlines tickets that cost taxpayers $100 Million. Too many federal employees are issued credit cards to buy items for the government which are instead used to purchase personal items. The Department of Education must do a better job of collecting the nearly $22 Billion in student loans that are in default. And there is inexcusable duplicity in programs administered by the federal government — 50 programs providing assistance to the homeless, 90 early childhood development programs, 342 economic development programs and 130 serving at-risk youth — just to name a few.

Before being elected to Congress, I was a small businesses woman. I know what it means to meet a payroll, balance a budget, and run a tight ship. As long as I am in Congress, I will continue working to make sure that our tax dollars are used wisely.

No administration, Republican or Democrat, and no Congress, regardless of which party controls it, can be excused for slothful spending or the waste of taxpayers hard earned money.
