Veterans

We must always keep the promise made to our veterans and to the families of those who have died in armed conflict.

We have made progress in increasing funding for veterans. Funding for veterans medical services was increased by $1.7 billion this year. Since 1995 funding for Veterans programs has increased from $38 billion to $69 billion. My efforts on behalf of veterans in the Hudson Valley will continue as we work to overhaul the misguided funding system that has impeded the flow veterans’ health care funding to New York.

I introduced the Securing Access to Vital Entitlements for U.S. Veterans — SAVE U.S. VETS Act– which would require the VA to correct the funding formula that has caused this loss of health care funds for Northeast veterans. The legislation requires a revamp of the current Veterans Equitable Resource Allocation (VERA) system that has been anything but equitable to the Northeastern portion of the country.

The Veterans Medicare Assistance Act, which I introduced, would enable veterans to use Medicare coverage to help pay their bills at a VA hospital.

I co-sponsored legislation that would increase the military death benefit received by survivors of servicemen and women who have died in the line of duty. This bill would increase the amount from $12,000 to $100,000.The bill makes the increase retroactive to all military families who lost a loved one in the line of duty since Sept. 11, 2001.

I supported the Service members Group Life Insurance Enhancement Act which passed the House and will permanently increase the maximum life insurance coverage available to service members and veterans. This bipartisan bill increased the maximum benefit coverage for Service members’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) from $250,000 to $400,000.

In addition, I have introduced legislation to provide a first-of-its-kind tribute to disabled veterans through the minting and issuing of a commemorative silver dollar coin in honor of disabled veterans. The public sale of the coin would be used to create a Disabled Veterans Memorial on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
